Bell ringers set to chime

Two years shy of its golden year, Muni’s “moving monuments” will be the center of attention at the 48th annual Cable Car Bell Ringing contest Tuesday.

The contest starts at noon in Union Square with two competitions — one for amateurs (local media and community representatives) and one for all-stars (car grips and conductors).

“It is no surprise that this contest has been going on for almost half a century,” said Nathaniel Ford, executive director of the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency, which operates the cable cars. “The participants always put on a great show in an event that allows us to celebrate our world-class city and our talented gripmen and conductors.”
