George Shultz as a singing Superman, Charlotte Shultz as Wonder Woman, Dede Wilsey as Glinda the Good and plenty of huge, wacky hats -- what else could it be but the 40th anniversary of Steve Silver's "Beach Blanket Babylon"?

San Francisco's City Hall sparkled at noon Friday to celebrate the production, a city institution that producer Jo Schuman Silver, wife of the show's late creator, calls the longest running musical revue in theater history.

Mayor Ed Lee, introducing the festivities and looking natty in a glittering jacket, said he rummaged through former Mayor Willie Brown's closet for the occasion. Brown, decked in cape and crown, played the emperor, while San Francisco Symphony's Michael Tilson Thomas was the maestro.

Joined by the San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus, the sequined cast of "BBB," including Snow White, Mr. Peanut, King Louis and performers sporting the show's signature massive hats depicting London, Las Vegas and San Francisco serenaded the audience from the red-carpeted steps inside City Hall. The audience included some of The City's biggest movers and shakers.
