Bay Tunnel project tour

On Thursday, Oct. 17, 2013, San Francisco Public Utilities Commission General Manager Harlan Kelly Jr. and Director of the Water System Improvement Program Julie Labonte gave media a tour of the Bay Tunnel project, where 654 40-foot sections form a steel pipe inside the new 5-mile tunnel under the Bay. The project is part of the SFPUC's $4.6-billion water system improvement program aimed at upgrading the aging Hetch Hetchy system that delivers water to 2.6 million people in the Bay Area. Bay Tunnel Project Manager Jim Stevens was on hand to give safety instructions and answer any construction-related questions.
