The No on Proposition B folks — which includes firefighters, teachers and yours truly, Mayor Gavin Newsom — spent the last five days carpet-bombing San Francisco neighborhoods with literature and door hangers that speak directly to working families who they say would be hit hard by the pension reform measure on the Nov. 2 ballot. And if that wasn’t enough, the campaign has also started airing an anti-Prop. B advertisement on dozens of television stations.
Backers of the measure, sponsored by Public Defender Jeff Adachi, are billing it as pension reform, but opponents point out that it is in fact a huge increase in health care costs that forces employees to pay out of pocket for their family’s health care coverage.
But public employees already took a $250 million hit in wage concessions this year; they have taken pay cuts totaling three quarters of a billion dollars over the last decade, according to campaign officials.
