BART to hire person to independently monitor police

BART is set to begin its candidate search for the new independent-auditor position that will help monitor the actions of its police department.

Following the fatal New Year’s Day shooting of Oscar Grant by police Officer Johannes Mehserle, BART underwent a series of reforms to its enforcement department, including the establishment — through state legislation — of a new position to monitor police policies.

On Thursday, the agency’s Board of Directors is expected to approve a $195,000 contract for a search firm to locate candidates for the new position. The contract will also pay for two separate employee searches for open senior commander positions on the police force.
