Rep. Michele Bachmann is running for president. Maybe.
According to CNN, the Minnesota Republican and Tea Party favorite is planning to form an exploratory committee by June or perhaps as early as May. The committee would look into whether she could win enough support and raise sufficient funds for a presidential run in 2012.
Bachmann, has been traveling around the country meeting with voters and is now in Iowa. She said Thursday morning that she wants to make her decision in time to be part of the Iowa straw poll scheduled in August.
She told the Desmoines Register Thursday morning:
“Well, we’ll be making a decision by this summer if we will or not. We haven’t made a decision that we actually will. But our national timeline that we’re following will be this summer because I believe it’s important to be part of the Iowa straw poll going forward, so I think a decision would have to be made by then.”
The GOP presidential field could get very crowded. Earlier this week, former Republican Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty announced he has formed an exploratory committee and others, including former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, are expected to follow.
