Authorities release mother of 16-year-old girl found dead in Bayview district

The mother of a 16-year-old who died on a Bayview sidewalk last weekend has been released from custody pending further investigation, authorities said Tuesday.

Police officers noticed the girl, identified as Jaynice Johnson, on the ground about 12:45 p.m. near the intersection of Quesada Avenue and Jennings Street. Realizing Johnson was in distress, officers began performing CPR and called for an ambulance, police said. But Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene.

Johnson’s mother was subsequently detained after officers determined that conditions at her home showed the girl was being abused.

However, the mother has been discharged pending the results of an autopsy.
