UPDATE: The District Attorney's Office eventually dismissed all charges against Robert Michael Hoffman.

A San Francisco employment attorney has been accused of sexually assaulting at least three women he met on Craigslist.

Robert Michael Hoffman, 50, allegedly made contact with the women in the “Men Seeking Women” section on the online classifieds website Craigslist, according to prosecutors.

The victims then went to Hoffman’s apartment in the Aquatic Park neighborhood of San Francisco, according to police. It was there that he allegedly became violent toward the women, who were forced into sexual acts. Police said some of the victims tried to leave the apartment but were prevented from doing so by Hoffman.

The allegations include a March sexual attack on a 36-year-old East Bay woman, the rape and beating of a 19-year-old San Francisco woman in June, and an assault on a 25-year-old East Bay woman this month. Police said there was a fourth victim but did not release any further information. Prosecutors declined to reveal details about the alleged attacks.

Hoffman was arrested Aug. 5 and charged with nine felony counts including rape, forcible oral copulation, sexual battery, false imprisonment and assault with intent to commit rape.

Authorities have not said whether there are more victims. A spokeswoman for the district attorney said the investigation is ongoing.

Hoffman appeared in court Wednesday to set a preliminary hearing date, but did not speak. He remains in custody on $3 million bail. He was initially being held on $5 million bail until a judge lowered the amount during his arraignment.

He is scheduled to next appear in court for a preliminary hearing Aug. 31.

In a statement Wednesday, District Attorney George Gascón said the alleged victims mustered “an incredible amount of strength and fortitude” to come forward about the attacks and “deserve respect, support and to have their allegations taken seriously regardless of the circumstances.”

The San Francisco Police Department is asking that any other women who may have encountered Hoffman at his apartment or any other location contact officers at (415) 575-4444.
