“Breaking Bad” star Anna Gunn has penned an op-ed in The New York Times about how the hatred of her character, Skyler White, has melded into an animosity against Gunn herself. She rightly points out the hypocrisy from fans who seem OK with Walter White’s twisted character, but give her imperfections zero leeway.
“Could it be that they can’t stand a woman who won’t suffer silently or ‘stand by her man’?” Gunn writes.
There are plenty of despicable characters on the show, but Skyler has spawned particular venom from fans. Someone even made a death threat to the actress.
“How had disliking a character spiraled into homicidal rage?” she asks.
Ultimately she places the blame on sexism, saying the whole thing is a “measure of our attitudes towards gender.”
