Anatomy of a tragedy 

What happened: Just after 2 a.m. New Year’s Day 2009, BART police were called to the Fruitvale station following a report of a fight on a train. Several passengers were pulled off the train. Oscar Grant III of Hayward was focused on. Eventually, he was forced to the platform floor and shot in the back by Officer Johannes Mehserle, who said he meant to use his Taser instead of his gun.

Originally charged with: First-degree murder

Charges the judge allowed the jury to consider:
— Second-degree murder
— Manslaughter
— Involuntary manslaughter

What happened Thursday:
— A jury convicted Mehserle of involuntary manslaughter with a gun enhancement

What involuntary manslaughter is:
— Unlawful killing of another person without malice

Potential sentence:
— Mehserle faces 2 to 4 years in prison on involuntary manslaughter and 3 to 10 years with the gun enhancement

When he will be sentenced:
— Aug. 6
