In the final event before returning to San Francisco this summer, the America’s Cup will hold their final event of the World Series in Naples, Italy beginning Wednesday and running through April 21.
The venue is expected to be quite different than the breezy, choppy conditions found on San Francisco Bay during the first two legs of the ACWS, in August and October of 2012.
“It’s going to be interesting to see what kind of conditions we will have in Naples,” said Ben Ainslie, skipper for J.P. Morgan BAR. “We’ve been doing some practice sailing in San Francisco, which is predominantly windy, and we might face some lighter conditions in Naples and that means we’ll have to adapt quickly.”
Things kicked off in Naples on Sunday with a locally-organized Coast Parade Trophy, with Emirates Team New Zealand taking first place. Luna Rossa Piranha, which is based in Italy, came in second behind helmsman Chris Draper, with Oracle Team USA’s team Slingsby finishing third.
The sailing teams will return to San Francisco Bay this summer, with the Louis Vuitton Cup running from July 1 through Aug. 30, followed by the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup from Sept. 1-4. The main event runs from Sept. 7-21, when the America’s Cup champion will be crowned.
