OK, so you’re probably exhausted from Black Friday shopping sprees. But don’t forget — this Friday, there’s a show worth leaving the house for: Australia’s great John Butler Trio is back in the Bay Area, playing a much larger venue this time, the classy Fox Theater in Oakland.
And if you’re yawning right now, thinking “Isn’t that that hippie jam-band guy?”
The answer is a resounding No — it’s a whole new Butler, a whole new Trio, in fact, on his brilliant new “April Uprising” comeback. Rocking like you wouldn’t believe.
Why the metamorphosis?
First, Butler went on an Aussie TV show called “Who Do You Think You Are?,” which traced his lineage back to a revolutionary matriarch in Bulgaria. “And also having a son made me realize that I had to find my own manhood, find some sort of understanding of my integrity,” says the singer, who also snipped his signature dreadlocks. “Even cutting my hair was a huge symbolic shedding of a shell, an exoskeleton, for me. Now I’ve got an energy that’s more focused and probably a little more masculine.”
