A day for green thumbs

Gardeners in San Francisco will have a few options to get their hands dirty on Saturday.

The Department of Public Works is partnering with the American Community Gardening Association and the San Francisco Parks Trust for a free event about gardening and growing your own food.

The “Dig in San Francisco” event, which will be held at Leland Avenue and Peabody Street in the Visitacion Valley neighborhood, is an extension of Mayor Gavin Newsom’s initiatives to “encourage urban gardening and healthy and local eating habits,” according to DPW.

The event will run from 9:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m.

On the other side of The City in the Outer Sunset, District 4 Supervisor Carmen Chu is inviting people to work on a community garden at Taraval Street and Great Highway. DPW will also be at that site to provide materials and supplies for volunteers, who will help install plants in the median.

The even is planned from 10 a.m. until noon.
