The 49ers won’t have to wait long to get a glimpse at former quarterback Alex Smith.
The NFL announced preseason schedules Thursday, and the 49ers will take a trip to Kansas City in the second week of the preseason to face Smith and his new team the Chiefs.
After Colin Kaepernick took over for the injured Smith midseason in 2012, he sparked the 49ers on a run that ended with a loss to the Baltimore Ravens in the Super Bowl. Smith was then traded to the Chiefs for draft picks in the offseason.
The Niners will open the preseason slate against Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos at Candlestick Park in the opening week (Aug. 8 to 11).
San Francisco will also host the Minnesota Vikings on Aug. 25 in a nationally televised game, the final preseason game in Candlestick Park history as the Niners will move into their new Santa Clara stadium in 2014.
The 49ers wrap up the preseason with a road game against the San Diego Chargers on Aug. 29.
Some exact preseason dates and times will be announced at a later date. The NFL regular season schedule is expected to be released later this month.
