San Francisco 49ers’ director of player personnel Tom Gamble has emerged as the top candidate for the New York Jets’ general manager job, ESPN reported Sunday.

Gamble interviewed for the job on Saturday.

The job opened up when the Jets fired Mike Tannenbaum last week.

Gamble reportedly declined a second interview with the Jacksonville Jaguars so he could concentrate on the Jets’ job.

Meanwhile, the Jaguars reportedly narrowed their general manager candidates to Atlanta Falcons’ director of player personnel Dave Caldwell and Arizona Cardinals vice president of player personnel Steve Keim, sources said. Caldwell also interviewed with the Jets.

Gamble is the son of former Philadelphia Eagles president Harry Gamble. He began his career with the Eagles and eventually worked his way up the scouting and personnel departments. He then spent two years as a quality control coach for the New York Jets in 1995-96.

After that, Gamble was a scout for the Indianapolis Colts under executive Bill Polian. He has spent the past seven years with the 49ers. He oversees pro and college scouting under general manager Trent Baalke, a former Jets scout.
