  • Unfazed: Aldon Smith racked up seven tackles and a sack Sunday depite being in a car accident the Friday before.

Two days before he started and played every snap against the Detroit Lions, 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith was in a single-car accident in which the driver was hospitalized with a “broken back.”

The Sacramento Bee reported the accident took place Friday at 11:45 p.m. The California Highway Patrol said alcohol was not involved.

The driver of the vehicle was taken to San Jose Regional Medical Center with a serious back injury. The CHP called the injury a “broken back.”

Smith suffered a cut above his eye and was treated at the 49ers’ team facility. He had seven tackles and a sack in the 49ers’ win less than 48 hours later against the Detroit Lions.

“I was able to play in the game and make a big contribution,” Smith told Comcast SportsNet Bay Area.

“Everybody’s good, we all walked away from it. The only thing messed up is the car.”

Smith, a first-round pick in 2011, has been involved in several off-the-field incidents in 2012.

He was charged with DUI in January in Miami and hosted a party in June in which two guests were shot and Smith suffered minor stab wounds.

Haggans suspended three games: Outside linebacker Clark Haggans, signed by the 49ers on Sept. 4, was suspended Tuesday for three games stemming from a 2011 DUI incident. Haggans will be eligible to return to practice Oct. 8. Haggans, who was signed after the 49ers lost Parys Haralson for the season, hasn’t played in either of the team’s first two games. The team signed the 13-year veteran knowing a suspension was a possibility.

Closing in on record: Running back Frank Gore needs just one carry Sunday to become the franchise’s all-time leader in that category. Gore is currently tied with Roger Craig at 1,686 carries. Gore is already the leading rusher in franchise history with 7,826 yards.

Brown fined: Cornerback Tarell Brown was fined $5,250 for wearing red sleeves in Sunday’s game against the Lions instead of the “team designated undergarment color of white.”
