A 21-year-old man was fatally shot in Visitacion Valley’s gang-ridden housing projects early Wednesday, police said.

Cops responded to the 1700 block of Sunnydale Avenue after ShotSpotter technology informed them of a shooting in the area just after midnight.

William Castillo of San Francisco was found lying between buildings with a gunshot wound to his upper torso, police Officer Albie Esparza said. Castillo was taken to San Francisco General Hospital, where he died from his injuries about 3 a.m., Esparza said.

Police have not identified any suspects or compiled a description of the shooter. The police homicide detail and gang task force are investigating the shooting, Esparza said.

“It’s unknown at this point if the incident was gang-related,” he said.

The killing marked San Francisco’s 25th homicide of the year.

Tensions in the neighborhood escalated after the March 30 killing of 21-year-old alleged gang member Diondre “D-Nice” Young, whose body was paraded down Sunnydale Avenue in a casket after a funeral April 11.
