An eighth-grade student was arrested at a South San Francisco middle school Tuesday afternoon after students and staff reported that he was walking around with a gun and ammunition.

Several students at Westborough Middle School told teachers that another student showed them a gun earlier that day. The teachers notified the principal, who then notified police, school district Superintendent Alejandro Hogan said. Officers arrived around 1 p.m., and the student was arrested after he was found in possession of the gun.

The 14-year-old told police he brought the gun to protect himself because he was expecting people to hurt him at a nearby park after school, Hogan said.

“No student or staff member was ever in danger,” Hogan said, adding that “teachers and students handled the situation incredibly well in making sure the gun was confiscated.”
