The 85th annual San Francisco Junior Golf Tournament crowned its champions Thursday at Lincoln Park Golf Course.

For the second year in a row, the boys' winner was a 14-year-old in his first year of eligibility for match play. Matt Lloyd of San Jose qualified for the final round by shooting a 71 in the qualifier, then upset last year's champion, Justin Goh, 3 and 2 in the second round of match play.

He locked up the victory in the final with time to spare, beating Sean McBride 5 and 4.

Facing off against boys from ages 14 to 17, Lloyd said his youth had him catching up to his older opponents, as he regularly saw their drives sail past his.

"I'm really excited because a lot of them hit it way past me," he said. "My wedge game is really strong, so I'm glad I came out on top."

The girls' winner was decided over two days of stroke play, with 17-year-old Rose Friedman of Mill Valley coming out on top with a solid run through the final round of play, finishing with a total score of 154.

"It was rough at the end," she said. "I was really close with the girl who was right behind me, so we were back and forth for a really long time. But then finally, with four holes to go, I was one up. And then I kept tying her on holes."

Friedman finished one stroke ahead of Maddie Jun, who finished first in the 12- to 14-year-old group. Christine Walker finished first runner-up in the older group with a score of 156.
